About U.W.A.C.

The Urban Wilderness Action Center (U.W.A.C.)  is a virtual platform for developing and sharing urban wilderness interventions. This website will host descriptions, instructions, and examples of projects that promote urban agriculture and engender urban wilderness.  Projects will be shared by different groups and individuals from urban centers across the globe. Collectively, UWAC will represent a global perspective on how to catalyze an urban wilderness.

A possible Urban Wilderness project could be designing a way to insert plant-life into supposedly unreachable or inhabitable areas. Another idea might be to create a way to safely embed a plant in your clothes, so that anyone can have a pet plant they carry around with them! Every city has its own local quirks that make it unlike any other urban center, and the definition of “Urban Wilderness” will differ from one person to another. Likewise, projects proposed on this site will trigger ideas for local take-offs on the same idea – we are excited to see how the seed of an idea will grow and transform as it travels across the globe.

UWAC is a continuously evolving platform that will organize and house a network of ideas and people through which new interventions can be created and spread. By doing this, we will build upon, expose, and contribute to the ongoing dialogue on urban wilderness.

Core Questions to consider when developing interventions:

  • How do we define wilderness in an urban environment?
  • How will these definitions relate to everyone?
  • How might this drastically change people’s perception of the urban backdrop and the wilderness?
  • How can events, built off the theme of Urban Wilderness, create dialogue among the community?
  • How can we promote urban micro-agriculture, and organize it to make it successful to the community?
