I invited designer Vanessa Harden and Samantha Varney, a third year graphic design student to organize a seed bombing mission through the back streets of Shoreditch, east London, in response to Everbloom…
Although Samantha is new to the guerrilla gardening community, her interest is in social change, she says she was led to the U.W.A.C. in an attempt to raise awareness about the communities we live in and our responsibilities to the planet. Vanessa has been involved with the London guerrilla gardeners both as a front line troop and as a designer. Her project, “The Subversive Gardener” explores various methods of disguising gardening paraphernalia in everyday attire and accessories, drawing on influences from militaria and spy gadgetry. She supports the more traditional urban wilderness cultivator in terms of them secretly dropping seed bombs on way to work or planting flowers on way home, with designs that allow guerrilla gardeners to integrate their assaults into their everyday routine.
Vanessa and Samantha together designed a seed bombing mission open to the public mapping potential hot spots throughout east London to test the effectiveness of the “Seed Pill”, a new design in comparison to the traditional seed bomb- this is made with a vegetable outer capsule, this in contrast with bombs made from clay or newspaper as fashioned by Eleanor from Stoke Newington Transition Group.
Vanessa’s seed pill combines the efficacy of the seed bomb with a cleaner, smaller and more discreet design, with the objective of the bombing event to collect data in order to inform and test this new idea. For the weeks following the seed pill/seed bomb missions, the pair will return to the different targets to monitor and document progress.
Vanessa and Sam believe this event will not only serve as a mission to beautify neglected areas, it will also contribute to the development of a new method of seed distribution to help in our quest for a greener planet.
