Stoke Newington Transition Group

Everbloom Pocket City Pollination:

Kai-Oi Jay Yung Intro: I invited Stoke Newington Transition Group (SNTG) to become involved in Everbloom… since I was interested in how the activism of one or two individuals has triggered the growth of a loyal, growing and intimate group of regular gatherers on site at Levi Memorial Gardens in Stoke Newington, providing opportunity to cultivate without gardens, skill sharing and raising awareness of public land use. SNTG has developed from more guerrilla gardening activities into extended funding and support from the council.

SNTG
Local activism: to empower community to deal creatively and positively with environmental and social challenges by raising awareness of challenges including climate change, peak oil and economic uncertainty. A Stoke Newington less dependent on fossil fuels destructive to the environment is more fulfilling to live in.

We are striving to include all parts of our community, working together towards a collective vision for a future in which we all have a say in designing and a stake in creating.

Enabling fun in re-skilling, knowledge sharing, forming specific interests subgroups- library, sustainability in the workplace, food and transport-  networking with people and organisations, putting together an energy descent plan for Stoke Newington.

TTSN is doing loads of stuff that might be of interest, whether it’s planting, making your home more energy efficient or participating in food workshops. Calling for input and involvement from local communities

How guerrilla gardening can instigate interest and ‘awaken people’s imagination’ to what could happen.

TTSN is focusing at t he moment on revamping the garden on Yoakley Road across from the Blue Legume. Not all seeded/potted there will end up being planted there- to use the space to seed swap and do workshops on planting, whether it’s in disused land or on balconies.

The planting and transformation of the Levi memorial garden has come out of small scale guerrilla gardening undertaken in 2009 which was really well received by all the different groups of people that use the space or walk past it every day. The plan is to use it for seed planting sessions to grow plants in the space, plus a food growing balcony project and other guerilla gardening.

Eleanor and Freya (two members) have spoken to council & the groups who have previously been involved in the space’s care  and it has been formalised that TTSN will take care of the space and use it for various community growing- based activities.

The council kindly donated a compost bucket and water butt.

On 20/03/10 we will be doing a follow-up seed planting session, open to all. Seeds that are planted will be taken home afterwards and cared for by various people and then replanted once the raised beds in the memorial garden are in place.

The space will have fruit, veg, edible flowers and herbs, as well as a patch of wild flowers.

Also on the day, there will be the chance to make ’seed bombs’. These will be dispersed towards the end of the event on a walk around Stoke Newington.

Another thing that will be happening will be a ’surgery’ for people to explain balcony spaces they may have at home and with members of ttsn, they will be able to make a rough plan of what they could grow (edible food).

This will be followed up with online discussions and support through our ‘food group’ forum on our website so that people can share tips, problems and advise each other.

This event is really only organised by me and freya-it’s a ttsn group effort-all our events are.

TTSN’s background is that it has been running since Nov 2008. Started as a group of 6 and now has hundreds of members that follow and are involved at different levels.

Just arrived on site, it’s raining, perfect for some sunflower seed cultivation and setting up of raised beds.
